Question:

How do I cite and reference non-textual outputs generated by AI tools?

  • Art
  • Music
  • Sounds
  • Video

The advice on AI-related referencing and citation may change in the future, so refresh your knowledge on a regular basis.

The referencing styles used at Bond University are yet to provide specific guidelines for citing or referencing the outputs generated by artificial intelligence (AI) tools.

If the outputs are not shared online, or otherwise published, they are not retrievable except by the user who generated them so they are considered nonrecoverable sources. Typically non-recoverable sources are not included in a reference list.

For images and other non-text generated objects it is recommended that you acknowledge the use of the AI tool.

Provide a caption for images.

Music, sounds and video

If you are writing about a piece of music, sound or video generated by an AI tool, then provide the acknowledgement in the text like this:

(Audio generated by AIVA, March 15, 2023. Selections: Lounge band; Eb major.)

AI outputs shared online or published

If the image, sound, or music has been published online then you could cite and reference it providing the URL. Follow the style manual as best you can for the type of output eg. music, art etc. Here is an example of some AI generated music which has been shared online.

New composition #1

In text:

(New composition #1. Audio generated by AIVA, March 15, 2023. Selections: Lounge band; Eb major.)

For your reference list, follow the style manual as best you can after determining the type of output (music, sounds, art, video)

  • New Composition #1, AIVA, https://creators.aiva.ai/publicPlayer?c=6411601984f42b001b64a8c3. Accessed 16 Mar. 2023.

Iterations of the output

If the output is the result of a series of prompts to the AI tool, it may be useful to include the prompts and sequence of outputs in an appendix.
