Question

What about data privacy on Open Athens?

To authenticate you to specific resources, OpenAthens collects your name and email address when you sign into the system.

Standard practice

Private data is not generally passed on to the content providers. OpenAthens, instead, passes a system-generated numeric ID to resource providers.

Exceptions

Some of the content providers allow users to personalise their experience once authenticated through OpenAthens. These personalisation features vary, but if available they might include:

  • Saving search results
  • Saving searches
  • Annotating sources
  • Recommended resources

To support this, they may request release of personal attributes. Each content provider's message notifying you that personal data is shared and requesting your approval will vary.
